Lorraine Desmarais

Lorraine joined the Sagkeeng Child and Family Services Board of Directors in 2019 and currently holds the position of Vice-Chair. She has resided in Winnipeg for 35 years, however proudly acknowledges her connection as a band member of Sagkeeng First Nation. Lorraine is a wife, mother, grandmother and Sun Dancer; and attributes all achievements and joys in her life to family, friends and the Elders that shared their traditional teachings through ceremony. Lorraine understands it is her responsibility as a mother and grandmother to ensure her children and grandchildren have a strong cultural foundation and know the accurate history of their ancestors. This responsibility is something she also brings to her professional and volunteer work. Lorraine graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Social Work degree and from the University of Winnipeg with a diploma in Human Resources and Management. Lorraine has child welfare experience in front line and senior management positions. Lorraine currently does contract work in education and training with various organizations and maintains that the personal and professional development of others in our Indigenous communities is what continues to inspire and motivate her.
